i was told about a book that had plans for a bowl lathe made from a ford 3/4 pickup axel and some other things, anyone have any books with plans like this? if they could be emailed of faxed that would be great

That sounds like it could be from the old Fox Fire series of books. They contain all kinds of articles and stories of old-time down-home make-do-with-what-you-have projects. There are several volumes. They show up on eBay pretty often. I have some older turning books and will look through them if I remember.

There's a guy from northern NY state that did something like that and hooked it up to a Toyota truck transmission. He says he has 12 forward speed and 5 reverse. Search for the Adirondack Woodturner.

Check at the local public library Curtis. Some of the best books are older, and can be found through PL searches. :)
