Hi, and thanks for all the support. My gavels did turn out well. Unfortunately my wife found a great storage facility adjoining the house, while I was gone for the year. Now I am digging out my tools and space to use them.

But my uncle has a new toy. It is a computerized cutting table that can use a router or plasma torch. It just so happens that he has some High Speed Steel, and I made a couple of lathe knives for hollowing out bowls. (See pict.) I hope to get to use these soon, and I would like to see some designs that other turners are interested in.

My designs were meant to be able to form the bottom edge of the bowl/vessel and the lip as well. Thickness of the steel is 4mm.

Dave,

As a Vietnam era veteran, I wanted to say thank you for your service to our country! It is impossible for you to know how much it means to me that as a country during this war we did not turn our backs on the men and women doing their duty! On a lighter note, I hope the new tools work as intended, and I look forward to seeing the results.

Welcome back, Dave! I bet that digging out the garage/shop is still nice compared to digging in in the sand... ;) Thanks for your service!

On those tools, 4mm is somewhat lightweight. Consider these as "refining" and "finishing" tools. For heavier cuts, you'll want them 3/8" or thicker unless you're creating very small pieces.

Welcome home. Thank you, from the bottom of my heart, for serving. It's a blessing to our country to have people like you willing to serve. I hope your recovery goes well (I know you get addicted to the sand and such!!!:D)

Good luck on uncovering all your toys, I meant tools.

Nice looking tools there. Send them to me and I'll let you know how well they work!

Welcome home, Dave. Thank you, from me and Her Majesty! God bless you. I spent two years in RVN. We had one Grandson get back safe from Iraq just a few months back, and another one is still over there.
Dave, don't dwell on the things you've seen, or the things you've done. War is a necessary hell, but don't let it get you down any more than it already has. Get into that toy box, and turn like crazy! And don't forget to take pictures. God bless you.
PS: The look like really good finishing tools, to me. Thicker is better, for a deeper reach. :D

I was thinking the same thing (not very thick). But the steel is free! He lives not to far from wood mills and we cut up a 36" dia circular saw blade to make these tools. I'm not looking to do any deep turning with these. But, rather, I was looking at making the finishing scraping easier at the bottom.
