With the help of a friend and fellow turner I turned my first two bowls today.

The first was a chunk of koa that came in a "turner's starter box" from Chris/Kalai way back when. It started out about twice as tall and tulip shaped but after a series of snags and cracks and other "ooopses" it came out like this:

Still rough around the edges but I'm just happy it stayed in one piece.

The second one was a piece of scrap wood my friend had. It is my first 100% solo bowl.

Critiques and guidance for improvement sought!
Thanks!!

Here is the bottom of the second bowl. I had to put it in a separate message.

Both bowls are finished with several coats of semi-gloss rattle-can lacquer.

Thanks for any comments.

Outstanding bowls. I like the rim treatment on the first one, how about the sizes of them?

Ooops, knew I forgot something.

The Koa bowl is 2-3/4" diameter and 1-5/16" tall.

The winged bowl is 2-1/2" diameter "neck", 4-1/4" diameter wings, 1-5/16" tall.

Both are about 1/8" thick.

Nice work. I especially like the shape of the first bowl and the finish on the rim. Look forward to the next one! Dave

i think you did a great job on the bowls.... the regular bowl is very nicely turned.... the other bowl , lets call it the hat bowl is ok ...it's like the ledge would be for vegies and crackers and the inside for the dip container.... hope to see more soon!!!!

For a 1st and 2nd you'd done very nice work. I agree about the rim on bowl #1 I like that type of work. #2 has it's own spot. To be green to bowls and take a stab at this type of work is nothing to smirk at. In time you will see things yourself where you will have improved here and there. Again very nice beginning.

Nice work on your bowls Greg! Really like the Koa - mostly because of the grain and small form! Looking forward to seeing your next series of bowls!

Thanks for all your kind words and encouragement!! You can be sure that I will be turning many more bowls and hollow forms as time goes on. I just received my hollowing tool from Lamar yesterday. :D And a little birdie told me I'm getting some Thompson bowl gouges for Father's day. :D:D (She was a little surprised when they showed up without handles so started asking all sorts of questions about how to make handles. :p) Now all I need are some scrapers and I'll be able to do more bowls like that at home rather than having to go borrow someone else's tools.
