This is my fifth shop-built plane. It gave me a good day as I watched the beauty of a hunk of cocobolo show itself.
I messed up the first brass cap and only had thinner brass left so I screwed and glued a piece of cocobolo from the same stock on top of the brass. It planes very nicely. The blade is 40mm x 3mm HSS from Lee Valley for $7.95. With the solid body and big cap, it planes even more solidly than a plane with a Hock blade plus wooden wedge that I made a year ago.:
