A widow friend of ours has her husbands stash of carving blanks and wants to know the best way to sell them off. I can help by getting a list but need to find our from this forum how carver's like to see this kind of information presented and what a fair price is, considering there is a mix of basswood and tupelo. Are the exact dimensions of each block needed, or is BF a better number?
The blanks are in Pensacola, FL. All suggestions appreciated, but no, the wood is not to be given away! Phil

if they are already cut into blocks then dimensions and species would tell the buyer what hes getting. a quick google search will give you retail prices so you have a starting point. and the best selling tool on line is......pictures

You probably know this, but basswood is fairly inexpensive. The cost of shipping it could be equal to what someone would pay for it in a local wood store. You may have to look for someone local to buy it.

Carving wood is different than turning wood because with carving you don't want a lot of figure - what's important is the carving. People pay big dollars for turning wood because they want strong figure in the wood, and wood with interesting figure is hard to find.

I agree with Mike, basswood should be sell locally. Don't know how much you have, but probably better to sell it in as large as possible quantities so that shipping or picking up the wood worth it for the price. Otherwise, you will have to sell it well under the price.

And pictures won't help much, these two woods don't offer anything to show up. The buyer will be interested in pictures only to make sure there is no unexpected cracks or defects before concluding the transaction.

Just an idea.
Not sure how much you have or what the ladies needs are. But a sure way to move it all is get a value for it, find a Boy Scout Troop or Troops and donate it to them and take it off on her tax return.
