I love the look of Norfolk Island Pine but have never wanted to part with the money to buy some. Today while roughing some bowls I grabbed a piece of Ponderosa pine that's been sitting around for years and gave it a spin. I guess you'd call it Poorfolk Island Pine. It's all cracked up but the wood looks pretty good. 6" x 6", pith down the center, sprayed with some Deft lacquer.

Curt,
That is beautiful! The shape (oops, form) is wonderful. There is much beauty to be found in "poorfolk wood" if one is willing to look for it.

Curt - really nice looking hollow form! Love the form and the slightly raised lip treatment! Good looking wood and the cracks add charactor! How was it as far as tear-out and pitch?

How was it as far as tear-out and pitch?
No pitch, it was cut at least 5 years ago and the pitch was all dried up. And the tear out wasn't to bad either and sanded easy being soft wood. But hollowing was tough. It's only hollowed to about 5/8" because the combination of knots and soft wood in between made it catch really bad. With all the cracks in the wood I was surprised it survived.

Curt

Nice Turning. If you take that pine and soak it in the oils that they do the NIP you will get the same result minus the red where the limbs were attached to the tree. I have a friend that has done this and they are really nice.

Curt,
Beautiful form. I had some Cinnamon pine a while back and could never get anything going with it. After looking at your form I wish I would have saved some.

Inspirational!

Curt, you've done a great job with this piece. Great form and orientation. Just goes to show you that any wood can be turned into art !

Cool wood. I have just about stopped collecting any more wood unless it is really special. What you have there is SPECIAL. Hope you do decide to part with some of it. Great looking stuff.

Very nice! Great piece!

As to the Ponderosa Pine...I have a PP bowl by Phil Brennion that I'd put up against almost any NIF. While there is a little difference in color, they really do finish out very similarly.

What a great looking piece Curt. I Love it.
You did a great job as pine is not always the easiest wood to turn.
