Greetings & Salutations,

Just finished this Redwood Swing for a customer
up in Indianapolis.

I will take it with me when I go for my Granddaughters
graduation next week.

With the price of gas the proceeds will just about pay
for the trip up and back along with a dinner out with
my daughter and her family.:)

Is the whole thing redwood? I usually try not to use it for the structural elements because it is so weak (structurally).

Yep entire swing is redwood I have one just like it on my front
porch and it has been out there for almost 3 years with no
ill effects.

Neato swing, Gene. I'm thinking if you made that swing a generation ago, people might have asked, "Why's there a hole in the armrest?". :)

Nice work Gene. The only thing questionable is the chain; it looks kind of flimsy. I'm sure you did your research on it. The customer doesn't have kids that will be using it, does he? :D

That is just a substitute chain that I used to hold it while spraying.

The regular chain is plastic coated and rated for 250 lbs and there are
4 so the total rating is 1000 lbs.

That's a great looking swing Gene. That redwood is beautiful. It's difficult to find such nice, clear boards even here in California where we grow redwood. I'd love to have one like that for my new porch.

Having built a couple of swings myself, I can appreciate how much work goes into them. Yours looks really nice.

One lesson I learned the hard way that I will pass on is to check the tip over point for the swing. If a child stands on the swing and leans back or an adult sits sideways with their feet up on the seat, does the swing tend to lift up in the front. With your back chain close to the back of the seat, you might have a tipping problem.

Nice! Clear redwood is easy to get...the problem is PAYING for clear heart redwood!!

Gene,

It looks great!

How do you make sure that it hangs even and level forward-back on the chains? Did you mock it up, or do some kind of analysis to find the center of gravity, or just try something and see if it works or .... ?

Thx
David

Greetings & Salutations,

The chains are independent of each other so there are actually
4 separate chains holding the swing.

By having the independent chains I have found that there
has not been any type of tip over problem and I have
2 identical swings on my front porch that have been in use
for a couple of years now with never a hint of tipping.

Thanks for the concern tho. I found a distributor over in
Memphis that handles the redwood along with western red
cedar and the price is not too out landish.

Thanks for all the cudos on the swings.
