A simple and modest Cherry bowl, 7 ¼” diameter x 2 3/8” high, sanded to 400 grit, 5 thinned coats of Minwax Wipe-On Gloss Poly. Will wait for at least a week before buffing.

I like it a lot Steve. Looking at the shine it has now you'll need sunglasses after you buff it up :)

What do you thin the poly with?

Thanks.

Steve I don't know what is modest about a beautiful bowl like that. I like the simple form and finish. Well done.

Thanks guys!

Paul - mineral spirits - just enough to get the poly to flow like water.

Classic bowl, simple design, beautiful wood, this adds up to my kind of bowl. I like it and if you try to sell it this is the easiest kind to sell.

Steve, I like the combination very much: wood, shape, finish.

I just love the look of cherry and of course you just make it look even better.
Been meaning to ask you this, how do you hold your bowls when wiping on the poly? You know, to get both inside and outside and no lap marks. Or do you do it in stages, inside, outside, inside, outside etc with the break at the lip edge.

this is not a modest bowl, it is a great bowl... how long did it take ???

Thanks everyone for your kind comments! It means a lot to me!

Maylon - when I apply finish to bowls, the first coat covers the entire bowl. The wood usually just sucks the finish in at that point and I don't worry about lap marks. From that point on I will only apply the poly to the inside until I get the level of gloss that I want. Then flip the bowl over and repeat on the outside.

Clara - it took me about an hour to do the finish turning of the bowl.

When you think of all the other steps involved to get to that point - it took a lot longer. I'm talking about harvesting the wood, roughing the bowl, DNA soak, waiting for it to dry, finish turning, sanding, applying finish and then waiting about a week or so and buffing the bowl.

Thanks Steve. What do you use for an applicator?

Maylon - paper towel, torn into small squares and then folded over to act as a pad. Works great for single use item and no worry about clean up.

Modest but beautiful. Love the swirling grain pattern and the finish. Yet another winner, Stevel.
