Anyone have a good example of an attached pergola? My wife wants one over the back deck - 26x8 (actually the deck is 26/15, but I only want to go out 8 feet). I saw an awesome redwood pergola and deck in a mag about two years ago, but can't remember what mag it was! Age...

Not sure I call it awesome the owner / architect liked it. I should swing in there and get a photo with the caps he had made for the 6x6 post tops and see IF the plants are climbing it yet.

It was a fun build. :)

Not to quibble but a pergola is a modest over head structure (see photo) typically over a gate or walway. But by your description 12 x 18' etc., for some ideas of patio covers see http://homeimprovementking.com/patio.asp

Fine HomeBuilding had a GORGEOUS one a couple years back. "guest" article from an adept outdoor structure builder. It looked like a piece of museum furniture.

Thanks, Ralph, nice pergola. We have the same problem with the sun. My deck faces south/south east and it fries out there. Worse is the heat on the house which is the reason for the project, so I may just consider your 45 degree idea.

a review of the old Sunset "How to..." publications on patio covers and similar pubs, some on sale in the book section at HD.

See Cedar national trade association pubs

Avoid pressure treated wood except at ground if even necessary at all - it warps and is being banned due to chemicals like arsenic, and looks terrible as time goes by.

Architectural design is essential - place per other comments to follow the path of the sun - not simply face E-W or N-S.

Stain/paint all your components before erecting

go to the DESIGN forum here and also enter "pergola" in this Search engine and you will be inundated with info. :)

Also the photo I included of my new front patio can be adapted - I have an 8' x 50' structure across the opposite east facing side of the house.

PM me if you like and discuss at length if you care to.

Keith,
thanks for posting. Wondering what the square footage is of your entry. Mainly wondering what span from the house you have going on there. thanks
