There have been some informative posts about Murphy beds, but they all seem to be free-standing units bolted to the wall.

Has anyone built a Murphy bed embedded in the wall, either fully or partially?

How about a smaller footprint version similar to the Moddi Murphy (http://www.moddidaypeople.com/murphy_bed_wall_bed/murphy_bed.html (http://www.moddidaypeople.com/murphy_bed_wall_bed/murphy_bed.html))?

You should check out the woodweb photo gallery. A fellow just posted a pic of some furniture he builds where the bed rolls up to the ceiling. Very nice looking pieces.

Pretty easy to build one into the wall if you plan ahead, but it seems most are after thoughts so adding walls then usually just ends up wasting space. All you need is the right little nook that either forms part of a closet for the room beside or in the same room.

On designs which use gas struts to counterbalance the bed (and that Moddi plan looks like it does), the bed must be in its stowed position to install the struts. This isn't difficult with a free-standing unit. You install the struts from behind the unit, then slide it to the wall and bolt it home. To embed your bed in the wall, you could make a bed-sized recess in the wall, make a free-standing unit, and then install it into the hole. Or if you really want to use the wall itself for the supporting structure, you'd need to have access through the back side of that wall so you can install the struts.

I have seen it done but you have to have rear access for the struts just in case.

I have been a big "fan" of SICO "Wallbeds" for many years. Top quality hardware, really comfortable and easy as pie to install and set up. Check em out here:
