Pen Blank Question

I'm pretty new to pens. I was in Barnes and Noble over the weekend browsing various mags. I read an article where a guy mixed various "ingredients" with wood hardener and then turned them. He made his molds by drilling 5/8" holes in 2x4 scrap. He cured them for about a week, give or take. Have you folks tried this method? Is this how people turn the coffee pens, oregano pens, etc. that I have read about?

not to take away from this forum, put join here penturners.org and they will probably be able to answer your questions much more thoroughly about casting. BTW i'm a.derhammer from that forum.
