I used my newly acquired dowelmax to make alignment pins for a new mahogany table top with extensions.
Ever go ahead and do something and not being 100% sure if the results will be as good as you hope and pray they'll be?
Well the results here blew me away completely.
I could understand the top of the mating table halves being perfectly flush due to using the same referenced top surface of the jig but the fact that I had to keep flipping the jig over to the opposite end of the jig along with using the extension rod to get equal distance between the holes was amazing.
Testing the fit of the table halves together for the 1st time after drilling the holes and inserting the dowels was one of those "Whoa! This is some tool!" moments. (Reminded me of the 1st cuts I made using a Bosch jigsaw)
Still have the 2 extra leaves to do but certainly have a new found confidence in what the end results will be.

Yep, I had one of those too. Just pulling it out of the box and handling it was a hint, but the real "whoa" came when I snapped the first test joint (face frame) together and the joint line literally disappeared in front of my eyes ...along with any lingering thoughts that it might be just another dowel jig.:)

This one doesn't cost so much but "knows" to make very good and accurate doweling...

I'm using spacers....

But that was the old jig....nowadays, I'm using this...it also costs around $200 but..."Hitachi router is included"...

The Bosch jigsaw analogy is a good one. One word of warning for using Dowelmax to align boards in this manner: Don't put the dowels too close to the edge of a panel you're going to saw to final length.

As interesting as a cross-section of a nice dowel joint looks to use, it is not necessarily desirable for it to show in the end product. (ditto with pocket screw joints)

Nissim - Nothing beats home shop ingenuity. Lots can be done with shims & spacers. Nice work.

Where in Poland are you located? Your name sounds more arabic than Polish though...

Thank you Jeremy

I live some 40 Miles south of Warsaw in a small town called Garwolin (Garvolin).

About my name...you are very close :)....it's an Israeli name.
I belive that you don't know Hebrew :) otherwise you would know that Nissim is taken from the Bible (like all the Israeli names) and means "Miracles" but I don't like it so much so I use the nick-name Niki (given to me by my big sister).

Regards
niki

Did you scrap the piece or use it? A lady I work with had a co-worker (not me) build her a lamp. The main back board had both corners cut off to round it with biscuits showing on both cuts! The guy used the biscuits for glueing up a wider board and didn't plan his locations very good. Well, at least they were in the same location...
