Steve:

You can get a motor from an electric motor shop or on line. I believe the PM 66 uses a frame 145TC, or (on much older ones) a 56C motor. The "C" means a its a face mount--the motor face bolts onto the saw. You'll need a matching pulley, too. Powermatic sells a 2-belt pulley. If your saw is an older one and it has the 3-belt arbor pulley, don't worry--two belts will be enough. I had to put a motor on my PM 65, and have been using a 2-belt motor pulley for over two years without any issues. I paid $320 for a single phase 3hp 240v Leeson motor then. (The PM 65 and 66 have the same motor and mount.)

This link is courtesy of the creek a few years ago. This outfit removes the motors from Powermatic equipment for the Amish (they use a belt drive from a water wheel or something like that). A 3HP 1PH motor and control is $375 new.

What kind of wheel and belt system would they need to get that kind of torque and RPM from a waterwheel, I wonder?

Any creekers in Lancaster care to share? I'd love to see a PM66 attached to a water wheel.

PS -- It's a damned shame we can't get the Amish to log on to water-powered computers made out of wood. I'd love to get joinery advice from them.

PPS -- Of course, they'd be hanging out in the Neander forums.

(EDIT) PPPS -- Here's a nice article about an Amish woodshop: http://www.wired.com/wired/archive/7.01/amish_pr.html
