Very nice Steve. I like that you call it a popcorn bowl - perfect for a great looking bowl.

I love the lines. And the wood is great. But it's far too small to be a popcorn bowl. The minimum size for popcorn (at least in my house) is 10" X 8"

I agree with your first thru third sentences. But on your fourth I have to disagree. That would be a mini bowl in my house. :D:D

Popcorn in our house is the biggest bowl we can find. :p

Thats the excuse I need for a new jumbo lathe. Need something big enough to make a jumbo bowl for popcorn. Will have to try that excuse out on the wife. See how far it gets.:D

Steve I have to agree with everyone else, great looking bowl, but not big enough to be called a popcorn bowl (think huge)...nice looking though. Bruce

How do you go about applying the gloss poly and getting so smooth a finsih? It is absolutely amazing!

Thanks everyone for your kind words! I do appreciate it!

Tom - wipe-on poly is super easy and very simple to do. I use a piece of paper towel folded up into a small square and use it as a pad to apply the finish. I put on very thin coats (prevents runs) and usually stop at 3 to 5 coats depending on the wood and how well it takes the poly. Some woods just suck the poly in and it requires additional coats to build up a finish. Any small bumps in the finish are taken care with a super fine sanding sponge - just lightly going over the surface. I let the piece dry/cure for at least a week before buffing.

Gee, I almost missed this one, it was way down at the bottom of the page! And I don't like to miss any Steve Schlumf's!

A job well done as always Steve. Some nice wood there and a simple, elegant form.

Thanks for the reply Steve

Do you apply the poly on or off the lathe? I typically use Minwax Antique Oil, but Poly seems to build much quicker

Tom - off the lathe. There are a few folks who like to burn in the Antique Oil while on the lathe (Bernie) but I never had any luck with it. I do all my power sanding while on the lathe and then remove it to apply finish. Hope that helps.

I don't care what you eat out of it or what you put into it, I like it.

AMEN Scott.... and that's only for one. One person, One bag, according to the wife.

Sounds like a good rule to me. Except we quit using the bagged stuff and went back to kernels and a hot air popper or on the stove in a whirly pop. :D

Nice wood Steve for sure, I really like the rim and the sheen. As far as the form I think it might have looked a tad better with a smaller bottom, but then again I guess it wouldn't have held as much corn.

Steve, I'm not so sure about popcorn but it looks like an ideal ice cream bowl. Beautiful work! I like the form and finish.:)
