I've seen several Hawaiian style bowls on various turning websites recently and have really like the shape of them. So I tried a small one myself. This is 5.5" x 3.5", a little too thick walled and then I cut a small bead around it for no real reason. I've seen them referred to as "Umeke" which I learned was the Hawaiian word for bowl and also as "Calabash" bowls which refers to the gourd shape.

Very nicely done Curt. Nice looking bowl, you just have to love the look of walnut.

Thats a great shape! The bead puts the eye right at the apex of the curve..very nice. Ive been playing with slightly enclosed forms also.. much harder to do well than it appears.. nice work.

Thanks for sharing.

Nice little bowl Curt! Interesting form, beautiful wood and finish! The detail lines work for me - make it something I would want to hold. Very nice work - again!

What ever you call it I like it. This is a very appealing form, and the wood seems appropriate.

No matter what you call it, it looks great. And the "no good reason" bead sets it off nicely in my view. Thanks for showing it to us.
