Two of my high school students entered their bowls in a show for high schools students at a local high end art gallery. The small HF won the student a $125.00 prize. They liked the fact that it was very thin. I am still a little shocked that it won over the large birch burl bowl the other student entered even if it isn't turned very thin. I am holding the winner in my hand to show how small it is, and the birch bowl is setting on a 3520B to show how large it is.

Jack - congrats to both of your students for being accepted by the Art Gallery! Every time I think I have something that will work for a gallery - I have been wrong. It is always a matter of taste - theirs - and what I find amazing in a piece of wooden art (grain, color, form, finish, imagination, etc) seems to have no bearing in the 'real' world.

Again, congrats to both of your students! Both pieces are true winners to me!

Steve, I think you nailed it.there is no way to understand the judges. When our daughter was into horse shows, she would be eliminated when the crowd around me would become indignant that she was cancelled. The people didnt know who I was, either. Max

Both pieces are winners in my book, and I have found that the "art world", is most flighty, and fickle. The thing that makes a piece artsy, wonderful, a seller, what have you is in the eye of the beholder, and seems to have little to do with form, or function. GO FIGURE!:eek::eek::D

Would say you were right in your impression...same here. R-e-a-l-l-y like the birch bowl, but is that filler in the lower part, hopefully not, it is so eye catching? Either way, very nice, both of the presentations.

Thanks for the compliments everyone. No filler in either bowl. He did have to glue one small chunk back in at the rim after a catch on the natural edge. The small bowl has a wall thickness of around 1/8', inside isn't sanded and just a average finish. The big bowl has between 1/2" and 3/4' wall thickness with a bottom that is around 2" thick because it was just to deep to go any deeper. It is sanded inside and out and buffed on the outside to a nice finish and unreal grain. He has at least 30 hours in this bowl. Here is another picture showing the top of this bowl. It is a bowl inside a bowl design.
