heres my first NE bowl, its cracked because over christmas brake i had the brilliant idea of drying wood next to a woodstove:mad:...... it looks like there are some tooling marks or tearout but they arent this peice is smooth, except for the cracks, some of the bark cam off but i just left it as is, i will do another in the future. can anyone guess the wood?

oops, i forgot the pictures, yes there is a hole in it, one of the cracks made this piece loose, the thing didnt come out when turning just pushed out, so when i started sanding, i didnt realize it was bigger than the rest, i kept catching my hand till i found it and took it out.

The bowls look great, too bad about the cracks and splits. Do you think the Super Glue and sawdust routine will help save your bowls?
I'm just recently getting back into turning after almost 18 years. Looks like you will get the hang of it pretty soon.
I dont have a chain saw yet so turning green wont be for a while. Green turning was my favorite.
Great looking bowls, maybe someone here will help with the cracking problem.

Curtis, nice bowl... cracks and all... You did well on the natural edge. I like the form, it's almost a calabash shape.
I will guess that it's Mulberry.
Stoves do not make good wood dryers. :)

Yep looks good Curtis. Get another one going. One thing I do is to mix sanding dust with epoxy and force it into the crack. A lot of times I mix DNA until the epoxy is like milk and paint it on followed by sanding dust. After it dries finish either with a finial cut or sanding depending on where you are at.

Even though the bowls did crack they look very nice. nice shape and form.

Kind of looks like an old pine tree. But if it's really smooth, it isn't pine, as the summer wood would sand deeper than the winter wood, so the wood would be wavy.
