Hey all. I just got a great deal on a Jet mini lathe, the 1014 EVS with bed extension and Jacobs chuck for $160!!! I got it for my dad (he is paying me back), and he now needs some tools. He's not likely to be turning a ton, and I know he doesn't have much money to spend on a set of tools. Is this set from Grizzly used by any of you all? What other inexpensive sets would you recommend? Thanks.

Matt:

You might consider one of the Harbor Freight set of tools

A grinder for sharpening is important to consider too.

I've been using that Harbor Freight set since I started. I've been slowly replacing then with Crown. To tell the truth The only difference I can tell is the feel of the tools. Can't tell any difference in the cutting, but I'm not an expert. Sure have got my monies worth out of the HF set and would not hesitate to by another set. I'm sure Grizzly's are just as good.

I am just getting back into woodturning. I bought the Jet 1236 and that was only the beginning of a spending spree. To help reduce the sticker shock, I bought (hesitantly) a set of HF tools. It was their best set. I think it was 8 pcs. for $49. I was pleasantly surprised. I figured that it would get me through for a while. The only tool in the set that I would rate as junk was the parting tool. I ended up buying a Sorby parting tool and what a difference that made.
The HF parting tool will eventually be ground down to become a side scraper.
I too would not hesitate to buy or recommend this to others.

PS. I also bought a HF sharpening system for around $100. Man, that is the cats meow. IT is an 8"sharpening wheel and an 8" leather honing wheel which I haven't used yet. The wheels spin at 300 rpm and the sharpening stone passes through a water trough below it. Works great. Very Impressive. Whenever you buy anything with a motor from HF, ALWAYS buy the extra 2 year insurance. Their motors and switches suck, at best.

When it comes to woodturning, a sharpening wheel is much more important than a grinding wheel.

I agree with Paul. I have two sets of HF chisels. The red handled set is about $50 and the ash handle set is about $40. The item number is 35444 for the $50 set and 47066 is the $40 set. Both are HSS and great starter sets but you will need to add a bowl gouge when he starts turning bowls.
