Allow me to introduce you to the Ugly Duckling. We weren’t all created as beautiful as Bo Derrick! I green turned this out of a piece of firewood. It’s thin, about 1/8 thick. It's about 11 inches accross, 2-3 inches high. I filled a few cracks with some CA glue. I sanded , when still green, to about 1500. I let it air dry about 6 weeks and applied four coats Minwax polyurethane, heated to 120 degrees, with a medium sized spray gun. I used 4-0 steel wool between coats, buffed with Tripoli and white diamond. I put it through a cold water-no heat dry cycle in my kitchen dishwasher for a final "blast" with the detergent and polisher.

Thomas,
That is very high on the "Extremely Cool" scale. Sounds like a lot of work to make it look so great.

Thomas its not an ugly duckling more like WILD THING looks great. I like different. What is the cold water dishwasher trick? Never heard of that.

Thomas - love the flowing form on this one! Beautiful finish! I'd have to say that your Ugly Duckling morphed into a Swan! Very nice work!

I like it well done Thomas , very nice indeed, .... wonder how a nice barleycorn pattern would look on the oblong side :eek::eek:;)

Sorry for a naive question, but how do you make that flowing edge on a lathe?

Is the piece mounted off-line? Is the edge sawn (or otherwise shaped) before being turned?

I think you can tell I'm not a turner :)

Gotta be magic Ron, or maybe a design flaw.
Very nice piece of "ugly". :):):)

I just love a good warp! I also am wondering about the dishwasher cycle. I have never heard about that trick.

Looks awsome! Some really nice wood, and you got some nice warping there.

Please tell us more about the dishwasher.

i think the dishwasher thing is the detergent, part of the way that a dishwashing detergent works (at least the powdered ones) is that its an abrasive, but its very fine which is why your dishes still shine, its just like tooth paste, verry fine sanding medium, plus some other chemicals
