View Full Version : What's My Saw Worth?

All, I'm looking to upgrade my current saw to a cabinet saw and am hoping to get a better idea of how much I might sell my current saw for.

It's a 2 1/2 year old General International 5-220 CL M1
It has the General T-fence with 50" rails.
Today the saw sells new for about $1100 (thanks to the WEAK dollar).

Some added details.
It's still in great condition.
I've added an extension table between the rails with a cutout for a router plate (I'll include the router plate if needed).
I've also built an out-feed table the entire width of the saw and rails that I'll also include with the saw.
The table folds down so that the entire saw can be rolled against a wall when not in use. I commonly store the saw this way.
I'll also include a crosscut sled and a "sacrificial" fence that fits over the stock fence and the mobile base.

Here are some pictures (hopefully not breaking any rules) to give a better idea of what I'm talking about.

Front right of the saw before raising the table: http://home.earthlink.net/~jscord/images/frontRight.jpg (http://home.earthlink.net/%7Ejscord/images/frontRight.jpg)
Back right before raising the table: http://home.earthlink.net/~jscord/images/backRightClosed.jpg (http://home.earthlink.net/%7Ejscord/images/backRightClosed.jpg)
Now with the table raised: http://home.earthlink.net/~jscord/images/backRight.jpg (http://home.earthlink.net/%7Ejscord/images/backRight.jpg)
Finally, from the front: http://home.earthlink.net/~jscord/images/frontLeft.jpg (http://home.earthlink.net/%7Ejscord/images/frontLeft.jpg)
The bar in the front left is a shut-off bar that I can kick to turn the saw off

Thanks for any help.

Either a PM2000 or General 650.
I like the idea of the General (Canadian made) but the PM2K has the rolling base, the blade guard is nicer and I seem to like the PM rip fence more (I have the General "home" style fence and for some reason I just don't care for it although I'm sure the "commercial" fence is good).
Even though the PM is from Taiwan it seems to have good components.
Still on the fence though.

Not considering the SawStop? I have set all my other TS plans aside and am planning to get a Sawstop. I just like the safety features it provides.
JUst wondering why it is not in consideration.

Nobody has any opinion on this?
I think this must be a first on this site. ;)

Jeff,

Technically, it is worth what someone will pay! ;) Check local newspaper ads or your local CL to find similar items. Is it worth 50-75% of new price? Maybe nobody has this saw so they aren't sure of its value?

Jeff:

I went through this scenario a couple of years ago. What I found is the used power tools are like used cars. When it came time to sell my saw it was very discouraging. I tried to sell my saw for half of its new value, without success. The offers that I did receive were in my opinion an attempt at highway robbery. So I got my backup and still have my old saw and my new cabinet saw. Shop space is becoming an issue. I've worked for Habitat for Humanity and this is a good cause and since the buying public is expecting me to give the saw away, that’s what I'm going to do.

No idea on your particular saw, but I'll give you two data points to help form an opinion.

1) Delta Contractor saw, made in USA about 2000. Biesemeyer fence, router plate in the side table, mobile base, two blades, an older unigard, upgraded to magnetic controls. Sold for $500.
2) Delta Unisaw, made about 1947. Repainted, new bearings, top ground, brand new-in-the box Biesemeyer fence. Needs a new switch, motor cover, and a side table built. Paid $750, plus I'll have about $250 more into it to get the above taken care of.

My experience is that, unless it is Festool, 50-66% of new for current production stuff.
