This topic was briefly posted on the turner's subforum, but it didn't gain much traction. I thought that I would pass it along over here.

David has produced two videos on YouTube demonstrating a rather large scale turning project. Interesting silver finish as well. I know I'm a fan and would have expected more than 1,200 views on his video by now. Take a look!

I wouldn't have done that with the gouge. I'd have mounted a router on that adorable little stand of his and hand spun the projecting exotic piece across the router cutter till I had it flush to the rest of the piece.

That "WHACK - WHACK - WHACK" effect would have made me crazy and I'd have feared that the hammering might have broken up the larger work piece But, it's all a matter of what works for you I guess.

I thought that exact same thing while watching it. About the "WHACK - WHACK - WHACK" that is. I like your idea with the router though.

I completely agree. The "WHACK" started to sound painful! I like the router idea. It's certainly not the first sculpture in that design that he's done, so I'm certain he has a great feel for it. I always learn something new from watching him, even if it's repeats.

To increase the quality on YouTube just add '&fmt=18' to the URL. This causes the videos to play at their highest quality video and audio.

The high quality URLs would be:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-QUNTpYq3Ys&fmt=18
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cNEzGLUK7WQ&fmt=18

Some videos that are poor quality do not change much. Others are significantly better.
