I am planning to build a grinder station for a dual wheel grinder. I'd like to house my shapening stones and related accessories in the lower cabinet, plus sharpening tools for my lathe. Due to a shop on the small side, I'd like to put it on wheels like the rest of my machinery.

Ideas, plans and especially photos on design suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

I have seen this type of setup in one of my books. The book is Building Woodshop Workstations by Danny Proulx.

Hi Jeff,

I build mine out of the design given in Shopnotes. It houses my Jet wet grinder and waterstones.

I wonder if something like this might work? ;) I built it for my wife, the woodturner in our shop. You can read the rest of the story at my blog (http://sandal-woodsblog.com/2007/12/02/a-sharpening-station-design-and-results/), and also see the plans. Enjoy! ------ Al

Al . . . lot of room in that station. What is the top made of . . . granite??

Jeff,

No granite. That is just a discarded countertop I got from a local cabinet shop - a cabinet that was sold, but without this countertop. So, I talked to my friend, and he gave it to me! I did cut off a little, to make it fit better to this cabinet.

Jeff,

I basically took Norm's mobile cart design and modified it to my needs. This is what I came up with. It accommodates my two grinders and a vice. The drawers contain other items for my lathe as well as smaller hand saws and the cart can be wheeled to various locations for the other stationary tools.

Rick, it looks like you are using both a Wolverine AND a Lee Valley grinder tool rest. Am I correct? If so, you are doing what I plan to do. If I am correct, do you remove the Lee Valley rest or does it stay installed all the time? I am trying to figure out how to use both the Wolverine and Lee Valley rest on the same machine.

Jeff,

You're right. I built a small jig to hold the LV to create the initial concave grind on my chisels and plane irons. As you can see, I cut some metal dowels and epoxy them into a block of hardwood and drilled some corresponding holes in the board I built for the grinder. I attached the LV holder with a couple of carriage bolts and when I want to use the Wolverine I just unbolt the LV and I'm ready.

Outstanding idea. That is just the kind of thinking I was hoping to get. Thanks!
