Is there a supplier who specializes in making embellished parts? Or do the plane makers themselves, custom make every part on their planes?? Examples....

For fancy knobs try this:

Otherwise, I think you will find many people make their own.

I was thinking of trying to do some engine turning on the side of my planes. Then the motor capacitor on my drill press went bad.

Thank you Matt, I intended to include that info, but just plane forgot....

Phillips plane are really something special. Of course, I was not looking for those specific items, but rather companies that might make similar items...

Will I don't know of any particular source that makes blingy plane parts, most of us that make planes for sale make these specialized parts ourselves in order to set the look of our plane apart from others. There is one guy that I know some of us seek out when we need something out of our own area of expertise and that is Johnny Kleso aka RareBear. If Johnny can't figure out a way to make it then it probably can't be made for a reasonable price. He is the go to guy when I need something that I can't make myself. You can find Johnny at www.RexMill.com

Will

Those parts you displayed are off a Marcou plane. If you ask Philip I am sure he will happily make you what you want. That is his business.

Johnny at Rexmill will do the same. His work is quality.

Do a search of the Lee Valley site. I am sure that there is quite a bit there in the way of knobs and things.

Or you could try making them yourself (not much in the way of machining tools needed): http://www.inthewoodshop.com/ShopMadeTools/Making%20Lever%20Caps%20and%20Lever%20Cap%20Screws %20in%20the%20Backyard.html

Derek, you never cease to amaze me. Great article. It almost inspires me to try it myself, but for the fact that I have too many irons in the fire right now.

I make some now and then..
I have been way to busy with 1/2 finished jobs to even think about making the last part for these Norris Adjusters... When I do Konrad (Saurer & Steiner) expressed intrest in buying them..

Maybe this Fall I'll be in a good position...

Nice John....

Is anyone aware of any reference books that discuss how to make decorative metal parts, often with wood inlays? I have never seen a book like this...?
