Charleston Museum

Has anyone here ever visited the Charleston Museum in Charleston, SC and if so do they know if any of Thomas Elfe's pieces are there? Im going there and was hoping to see one of Elfe's original "Double Chests". Perhaps in Elfe's home which is also in Charleston?

Two years ago, we spent Christmas in Charleston. Great experience. It was sunny and 60 degrees - not like Ohio.

We got a $50 pass that got us into six houses, the Charleston Museum, and two plantations. If you have seen the latest Fine Woodworking, you can see the breakfront on the back of the issue in the Heyward-Washington house. They will even let you take pictures.

I do not remember whether there were any of the Elf pieces displayed. Go to http://www.heritagefederation.com/ for more information. You have to ask about the $50 (at least that what it was two years ago) - they do not seem to advertise it. We bought the tickets at the visitors center.

Not all of the houses will let you take pictures, but it is a great tour of funiture. One of the plantations and on of the houses have no furniture, but worth it.

Not sure about Charleston but if you want to see several Charleston pieces you can stop at MESDA (Museum of Early Southern Decorative Arts) in Winston Salem, NC. They have one somewhat unique double chest along with several more pieces.

The only double chest with a pediment is at Colonial Williamsburg. Both of these locations might be worth a day trip from WV.

Have fun in Charleston, the 18th century architecture is great. Just a beautiful town. Cal

When you get finished at the museum another attraction there in Charleston is the USS Hunley. It was on display at the old naval station, very interesting museum.

There are quite a few pieces of Elfe furniture in the Heyward-Washington House, one of my favorite tours. I have lived in the Charleston area for almost 40 years and will be glad to give you some places to see. I do not recall any Elfe furniture in the museum.
