Jim, you can find a comparison chart on the Leigh site:
http://www.leighjigs.com/download/Comparison%20Chart-1.pdf

Highlights:
- D4 sidestops bolt on vs. D4R are machined in
- D4 clamping bars are steel vs. D4R aluminum
- D4 sliding DT fence is steel vs. D4R plastic
- D4 HB bridge material shop-made or optional vs. D4R supplied
- D4 instructional video is VHS vs. D4R DVD
- D4R includes a template guide
- D4R includes a HB bit

I have a D4 and perfectly happy with it -- as I would be with a D4R. I have read the D4R will sit flat on a bench. Seems a small thing, but if true, this is an advantage (having searched for just the right spot for my D4! -- finally mounted it with stand on the wall above my garage door -- kinda gives the place a "hunting lodge for woodworkers" feel).

The D4 is what I have used for several years - it is a terrific jig! The D4R has some improvements, but for the price you mention you will do well!!!
