View Full Version : SMC Demographics Part II

Hello Everyone!

Just wanted to update everyone on the SMC demographics maps--
I've put together two for the time being (attached below). Ah, the
power of the creek rises once again! :p

For reference, here is the first thread: http://www.sawmillcreek.org/showthread.php?threadid=4932

I have postal data on roughly 43% of our total membership since
posting the first message in December. Nearly 95% of new members have
filled out the postal code field since I added the ZIP field to the profile page. Good job!

In your Profile pages (http://www.sawmillcreek.org/profile.php?do=editprofile), I have added fields for latitude
and longitude, and for those of you who gave me US ZIPs, you'll notice
that these two fields are filled in for you. (Aren't I nice?)

I want to thank everyone for volunteering this information--
Hopefully after seeing these maps, we can get the other half of our
members to update their profiles with their rough location information.
Once again, the demographic information is kept completely confidential.

So, on with the chase--here are the two maps I've generated:

The first one is a picture of the world (hey! The world is flat!). I've circled some of the outliers--for international users, you will find information on determining your longitude and latitude on the first link I posted on the subject .

The second one is a picture of the continental US (minus state boundaries):
Looks like we have a ton of folks from the New England area! And, as
you can see here, there is no wood in the mid-west. :D
(kidding, of course, there just are no people!)

I will generate some better maps as soon as I get more data-
remember these maps only represent 43% of our membership.

Better yet, how about I calculate the optimum place to host the SMC picnic?! ;)

Cheers,

Aaron

I see the line of demarcation is roughly the Mississippi River...well, a bit to the West! :)

Aaron, this is cool data but could we have a clear map of the US with state lines!? PLEASE!!! :D :D

You seem to be missing two very important parts of the USA; that is Alaska and Hawaii.

I guess that it takes a Canadian to notice such things.

Ah, but they exist on the world map.

Are those two countries part of the US, Frank? :p

Funny thing mostly for the folks out East but after a while, the state of New Mexico started putting New Mexico, USA on all their license plates! My father is from there I am from Colorado so we always found this rather amusing....

So,hy bother with a USA map?

Aaron Koehl

Frank,

The continental US map was included as it has the highest concentration of members, and by zooming in it is easier to see the distribution. Alaska and Hawaii are not missing--they are on the world map--but there was no need to include them in the zoom, because they are not part of the concentrated distribution.

I second the motion for a map with state lines :D It would make it easier for all of us geographically challenged folks... I do not live near anything that would help locate me on the map, except for that REALLY big hole due north ;)

Although the map shows part of Canada, I dont think that Aaron intends to mark Canadaian sites on the map. Or, do you Aaron?

Aaron, why did you post this to the General Woodworking forum? Doesn't it belong in the Support forum?

Seems obvious to me that the next picnic should be held somewhere mid-Atlantic.

Ian, perhaps Greenland? :D

Yes he does he said this was a map of the USA isnt Canada just another state. From one who lives north of Canada

Aaron,

If you would get your head out of that spinny thing that causes people to cut wood too short for furniture, you would see that the world is flat. And your pic proves it.

Obviously, the perfect place for the SMC woodturn... pardon... woodWORKER festival is almost central USA. North West Arkansas to be precise. Wish I had the room for more than a half dozen folks. :(

Frank,

I have marked all Canadian sites for which members have supplied data
in the appropriate format. What exactly are you trying to insinuate here?

Thanks, Dan--
If you visit your profile page and enter your coordinates,
you will make it on the next map-

Looks like a pretty heavy concentration in the N GA area, so maybe the gathering should be in the N GA mountains. Of course, my suggestion has NOTHING to do with the fact that is where I live...

In the mountains of N GA...

_Aaron_

I was not trying to insinuate anything. I was just speculating that, although part of Canada appears on your USA map, that you likley would not be marking the places where Canadian members live on that map. Am I correct?

Aaron Koehl
03-31-2004, 9:42 AM
No, that's not correct. It's just a regular zoom, centered to get the most members in at the same time without making the map too small, and without regard to state or country boundary.

Very cool data maps you have there. I wonder how many of the remaining 57% are active and even know about the profile request?

Sure would be neat to see everyone get the info in.

Chris Padilla

I agree, Kelly. We need more support West of the Mississippi!! :D

Good. I am glad that I was incorrect.

No, no, you have it all wrong. the picnic should be in Colorado. This way more people get to go on a road trip! :) In fact, you can have it at my place - adminission is 1 hardwood tree trunk (at least 8 feet long and 20 inches wide) hauled and stacked in my workshop (I will cut it unless you want to help) :p
