banksia and a pen

did a little turning this afternoon. The pen is my first custom request and came out well (I think)

I used half of a banksia pod for a mushroom form about 3 1/2 inches tall. I back cut the cap a little so you can see through some of the holes...

very nice on both. I really like the mushroom. I think the detail on the pen would pop a little mone if it were on a different background but still very nice.

I like them both, but I love the mushroom! I happen to be a mushroom enthusiast, and I think the banksia pod makes a great looking new species. Okay....I'm a nerd.

I have a soft spot for 'shrooms. I like to take pics of them in the spring and try to emulate them on the lathe.

here is a pic of my favorite wild 'shroom from this spring. I think that a replica would need both carving and turning, only one of which I am even remotely skilled...
