I am lasering a picture on alder wood using photograv 2.1. I am using cherry as my material selection and can not get the results that I see on the forum. I am using a 30 watt xenetech laser engaver and wondering if someone can give me some advice on what settings to try.

I don't know if you have tried this, but I always brighten up my photos by 15-25% before engraving. The photo will look weird, but I find my photo engraving turns out better. Give it a try.
