My first post here. I have a bench grinder by way of my late brother. When I got it there was no switch. He apparently plugged and unplugged it when he needed to use it. It does spool up and and I can do the work OK but when I unplug the thing it will coast for several minutes. Does a grinder switch throw some reverse polarity to help brake the stones? This is a safety issue. It is a basic 3/4 hp 6" Chinese grinder. I want to replace the switch, but I want to use the correct part.

There is no brake on a typical grinder motor. They will spin for a while after being disconnected from the power source. There is nothing unusual about this grinder.

Hi Dale, braking a grinder could be an interesting process, since the wheel flange nuts could unscrew.

I believe that's pretty standard, my ryobi will wind down for several minutes.

Think about this for a second............

What happens when your brake pads are gone?

You hear metal, grinding on metal!

This would be grinding ALL the time, brakes wouldn't last.

I view the "long" wind down is a good sign...the bearings are working quite nicely. :)

I've never seen a grinder that did not work in this manner, although it's certainly possible that something with an electrical break might exist.
