one up three down

I have seen these square turnings where three wings go down and one is up. Does anyone have any advise on how these are done or where to get some info on how they are turned?

Turn with 4 up, and 4 down, then carve away the unwanted wings.

[Allen Neighbors]

Turn four, leaving them all very thick, then saw away the parts you don't want... i.e., the tops of three, and the bottom of one.
