What is your preferred tool for creating captive rings?
1. dedicated tool such as this: http://www.hartvilletool.com/product/12103
2. combination of available tools (skew, gouge, parting)
3. self made tool (I put a handle on a hex key and grinded it. Mediocre success)
Thx! :)

A Variation on #2. I made a pen with two captive rings, I used a dental pick. While I was at my semi-annual visit I asked if they threw away the old tools. They did and I asked fro some "scrap" I got 3 of the nicest little detail tools. Now I ask every time I go.

While I do not have any captive ring tools, Crown tools do have excellant HSS steel nad are very well engineered. I use several others, and have had no regrets about them. :)

I have had no problems making them using an old screw driver that was very long and thin. I bent over the tip and ground the end into a parting tool shape. Works great, plus I can still open paint cans with it.
