Ive had extra shop time recently, and decided to make some bandsawn boxes to give as gifts to family and friends. These are just simple boxes with a brass hinge pin trapped between the lid and box sides. The back row is maple in the center box and maple and bloodwood on each side. The front boxes are maple and purpleheart, one walnut and purpleheart and one walnut with birch veneer glued into kerfs. These were all made on my 14" Ridgid w/riser. They are roughly 6-7" in width. The finger relief was sanded on the nose of my belt sander. The drawer on the middle box in the back looks wopperjawed in the photo. Its the low-rez of the photo.

Very nice, nice finish, what did you use? Also what was you starting solid stock 8/4 and 3/4 glued together?

Great looking boxes, Lance.

I have a lot to learn before making those. So much to learn...so little time!

Jason... since I finish in a small basement shop, I need a finish that is oderless, or as close to that as possible. I use Minwax Polycrylic. Its waterbased and oderless. I also like the fact that it dries almost instantly(10-15 minutes)

The starting point of these boxes is 8/4-12/4 or even solid rough chunks of wood. I have some walnut that is 16/4 and I have used that as well. If you want a contrasting strip of color, yes just a simple glue up is what I do.

There is a lot to like about these boxes, nice clean lines and proportions. As well they are highly functional - well done!

Thanks Tony, that means alot coming from you. I really like bandsawn boxes, and like the simpler ones. These, and lift-off lid ones, are my favorites.

Beautiful work Lance. I like the idea of using the edge of the belt sander to make the grab recess.:)

Those are so nice . . . . Please tell us again that you were able to do those on a 14" Bandsaw. I have a 14" DELTA X5 with a riser, I wonder if that will do the trick? I have resisted trying any bandsaw boxes because I assumed my saw would not have a chance.

Are you running the saw as a 220 volt or a 120 volt unit? What blade did you use to make the cuts? Those are really nice . . .

Steven, these are done on a 14" Ridgid with a riser. Its 3/4 horse and does a good job. I use an 1/8" 14 tooth per inch blade to cut out the center. When I cut the side pieces off, I use my Grizzly G0457 with a 3/4" 3 tooth blade. You can use your Delta for all of this, just use a larger blade to rip the sides and then the small blade to cut the center. When using the small blade, a Carter Bandsaw Stabilizer works great. The Ridgid is 110 volt.
