Hi folks,

This is more or less my first wood project and I would like your opinion:

I'm planning to build a CD shelf and I managed to create a small sketch but I'm not sure if my materials and build choice are correct.

The overall idea is to build something that is cheap more than durable, but since 400 CDs can be considerably heavy I'm particularly concerned.

I was thinking about using 18mm MDF boards for the top, base, back and sides, 3mm for each +-37w X 14d cm shelves.

Sides, base and back joined by dowels and possibly 4 minifix fasteners or something similar allowing reasonably strong joints without glue for easy disassembly (I have a horrible tendency to move countries like most people move houses) http://www.woodworkforums.com/images/smilies/standard/redface.gif

I'm particularly concerned with the need to drill dowels on the "edges" of the 18mm MDF. Would it crack before hand? Would the base (seen on the attached picture) handle the weight?

I thank you in advance.

MDF sags a lot more than ply. 3mm is too thin for a 37 cm span IMHO.

3/8" ply might be better suited for the shelves.

The 18mm MDF should not split with the dowels.
