I really appreciate all the advice. This is a terrific forum. Couldn't do anything with the buckeye burl part since it was taken down to 1/8" so I'll make the base narrower on the next one. Was able to rechuck the top to recut the finial and make it shorter and somewhat more delicate. Was limited to the wood that was already there and my lack of experience on spindle turning. I've only made 11 pens and 14 bowls before taking a class on hollowed forms so my woodturning education has some big gaps (no boxes or spindles). Thanks for all the helpful comments.

Hi Bill,

There's no since in rushing around trying to do everything today. There are more trees out there than you could ever hope to harvest and turn, so take your time and enjoy each one.

Bill,
Big improvement on the finial with the amount of wood you had to work with. Am also still learning (obvious from my posts). If you can turn pens, you can turn finials. Don't need no stinkin' spindle class. Spindles are just tall, thin solid bowls or funny looking pens with no pen.

But seriously folks, those classes can be very helpful in speeding the learning process. Press on Bill.

Great job on the finial. It takes a while. You might want to look at Cindy Drozda's DVD's on finial turning. The first one she takes you step by step on how to figure the size all the way thru turning it. It helped me tremendously.

I like the new finial much better. Now goes with the rest of the piece. Great job on the new design.

With wood like this Bill the only improvemnet I could see is the one you have mentioned about a smaller base. I think the finial is just fine for the piece.
