This one is Russian Olive. This stuff is a weed around here. A bit challenging to turn, and it really stinks. But it looks good and has an interesting grain pattern. 6.5" X 2".

Looking at the weeds outside my shop door..... I wonder if the grain pattern of crabgrass is that nice

Great looking bowl Brian. I know what you mean about it being a weed tree, I grew up in Pocatello.

This wood is super in color and grain patern. I like everything but the raised foot.

Glenn,

Can you elaborate on the foot comment? It was late when I posted this, and I forgot to ask for a critique. I need all the help with form I can get!

The wood, less sapwood reminds me of ash. Ought to be lots of it to turn. The simplest foot to my eye is what I call the Grumbine foot. Just flaten the bottom two in circle, then slightly dish it out. One or two light passes with the bowl gauge. :):)

On the other hand, a short, small diameter foot is not visible from most viewing angles and can help the piece "float" above the surface just a tad.

Your weeds are a lot better looking than our weeds, except maybe for mesquite.
