You can use only the Low Gloss Black paint but I have a hard time finding 8 cans at one time so I use Low Gloss Black for first coat and Gloos Black for 2nd and 3rd and Semi Gloss Black for 4 th coat..

I should have website updated in about a month as I am waiting till all new pics are done..

What's the blue on the bed? Obviously to keep paint off, but what is it? Blue painters tape? Those look great, I guess I haven't been putting enough paint on because mine never look that smooth. I do 2 coats or so, I'll have to try out that paint too. Thanks

Terry,
Painter Tape, I use what ever is on hand for the Bedrocks.. Bailey's I dont mask and just scrap off the paint with a screwdriver on the frog seats..

I some times do six coats, start light and increase to a flood near end..

Note the paint and brand you can get it at most Atuo Stores..

You must read the can!
Wait 20 mins before re-coating and if you let it go for more than a hour you may have to re-strip the planes and start over..

If you re-coat the planes the new paint will bubble the old up and life it off th plane worst than thinner...

If you have waited a little to long try two very light coats to soften the top layer..

The paint also shrinks quite a bit and try to spray it on a level surface so it doesnt pool up or run off the side..

PS:
I think the 3rd and 4th pics are out of number..

Thanks for the tips, RB. What's your set up for sand blasting? Looks like you spray outside. Do you make an attempt to catch the sand and reuse or is that pointless?

Looks great :)

Did you mask the sides? or bother with the bolt holes? How long did you let the planes soak to loosen the paint, in the thinner? Keep us updated on your progress :D

Thanks
James

I use Play sand to blast but run it threw a fine kitchen strainer (window screen) as maybe 1% of the sand has tiny rocks that clog the sprayer.. I have plans to buy a new trash can but for not I dont recycle..

http://stanleytools.home.comcast.net/~stanleytools/paint/10.jpg

50 lbs of sand is 5 gals, I use old buckets and tops to store the sand as it needs to be kept day or it will be hard to strain or spray

I dont mask the sides or holes but I do make sure the holes are clean and free of sand..

The planes will need a final sanding and buffing when done.. Its more work to mask and unmask than it us to resand or buff after painting..

Depends how long to leave planes to soak..
I made the tray from alum. window wrap, I tried HD Aluminum foil but rips pretty easy..

I may soak a plane 3-4 times and in between I use a screwdriver to chisel off loose paint..

In general 30 mins is a good start but some japaaing comes right off some is a real bear..

I can see the sense in just scraping it off the bed for the regular frog-style planes. Do you have a problem with the spray getting into the screw holes? If so, how do you deal with it?

I wonder if an old piece of roof gutter, capped at both ends, might be a more sturdy soaking bed? Just a thought...

Be sure to make a big announcement when your site is back up and running!

Hi Ethan,

This seems to work find I just wish I made it double No7 wide and not double No3

No leaks at all and I am making a cap for the top using the same materail...

No issues with paint clogging holes, there is issues when sand and stripping dirt clog the holes but I make sure they are clean before painting...

And an excellent thought it is. After days of searching the local stores, I just gave up and glued some wood scrap into a trough and lined it with a gargage bag. Fortunately, I only had one really long plane to do.

For electrolysis, I've used the disposable plastic trays used for soaking prepasted wall paper...$2 or $3 IIRC. Not sure how some of them would hold up to lacquer thinner though.

Just curious, would there be a reason you are sandblasting rather than electrolysis?

Nice pictures and good post.

I do electrolysis on some planes that are very rusty..

I do the sand blasting as I think it makes the best surface for the paint to stick to and remove what the thinner will not...

Electrolysis dosent work as well as I had read IMHO... I own a 100 amp battery changer, seems to work better removing japanning than rust :)

If I had 2-3 rusty planes, I would have done them all in the electrolysis bucket but most where in very good condition that not..

Here is a pic of today batch of planes and you can see they dont it..

Johnny,
Looks really nice. Couple of questions:
1 have you tried using an auto primer [reddish or grey] as a first coat?
2 where did you get the sandblaster unit. Looks like it is small and effective. Is it pricey? The bare planes look really clean down to the metal.

TIA
Ken

Ken,
I dont use primer as this paint is very much like a primer.. If you wait an hour plus and spray on another coat the new paint will peel up the old...

Most times I just use the semi gloss black you can use the flat black as a primer.. I noticed this time that the gloss black builds thicker much faster than the others.. This can save you adding more coats or do as I did use all three types with the semi gloss on top... That color is a perfect match for japanning...

The sand blaster is from Harbor Freight and is about $19

This is not normal paint it might eat the primer and make it bubble up.. Plus id you scratch the paint you will see red or gray.. I tried it :)

The sandblaster is from Harbor Freight and goes on sale often for $19..

They also have a bigger pro type 20 lb unit for about $60 if you have the space..

The trays that wallpaper hangers use to soak wallpaper rolls in are a good size. I don't know if they will stand up to lacquer thinner, though. I use them for citric acid soaks. Personally, I think paint stripper in a spray can works fast and is much less hassle than the lacquer thinner (and cheaper).
Johnny, the painting tutorial is awesome. I too was using too little paint. Good tip on the recoating schedule. Sounds like it is real critical. That paint sets up pretty fast, fortunately.

I have tried it and I have never got it to look as good as the Motor Paint..

Todays plane makes use power coating and if they did not have that I think they would use paint..

150 years ago Japanning was they way to go but in my back yard shop spay paint is what I think is best..
