Boys and girls

I have a new website. I really didn't think I could do this - and I was right! With a lot of help from a local specialist, basically teaching me what to do, I have completed a fair wack of its design and re-editing my articles, which have now been uploaded. There are still some links to go in, for example you will need to backspace out of articles.

Some of the files are large as I wanted to keep each article as a single page. The file images are small (40 Kb) and should load quite quickly, but they may need to be reduced even more (to 20 Kb).

There is still missing stuff, such as contact details, etc, but otherwise it is functional. Note that links to the old address (on wkfinetools) no longer work.

The new address is: "in the woodshop add dotcom"

There are already a couple of new articles, and a few more on the way. I hope you enjoy the site and use it as a reference. All feedback is welcomed to improve matters.

Regards from Perth

Derek

Very nice, Derek! I took a quick look and really enjoyed your article on renovating the infill shoulder plane. The article on renovating the Stanley #62 may come in handy as well, since I have an old one I had considered a parts plane, but may now be inspired to try to renovate.

Would you give the web address again? I'm not having any success finding it at the moment.
Thanks,

Nice site, Derek -- nice to see all your articles in one place.

I found your web site, Derek, but let me suggest that you go into your profile and put your new web site URL in your profile. It's allowed and will permit people to find your site later, when they don't see this thread.

Good job on the site. I'll spend some time going through it.

Dont know why I expected to see a kangaroo for a shop mascot, but nice site. The blue font on black background is a bit hard on the eyes though. I'm looking forward to a Brese plane review. I noticed when I ordered mine that you had some high angle version in the works.

"...The blue font on black background is a bit hard on the eyes though..."

Agree. Also, for anyone who has not deciphered Derek's "cryptic" URL it's:

http://www.inthewoodwhop.com

Definitely worth a peruse....

Hi Derek, you are among my most admired gurus; congratulations on your good sense to dedicate your attention to wood and let someone else do the cyberspace driving. Larry R

Have to agree with the comments on blue text on a black background.

Like the page on the #140. I have one of these sitting on the shelf waiting for me to figure it out. Have not had a great need for it, but it is about time to put down the chisels and start using the tool made for this.

Thanks for the feedback. It is really appreciated.

This website went up in one week, which is also the sum total length of my training in website design! So there are several changes earmarked, including font colour. The cover has already been done. The rest can wait for tomorrow (it is late here).

I am finding that image size does not translate well from forum pages to website, per se. The shooting board article will be re-formatted.

I welcome all comments.

"...that image size does not translate well..."

Don't know what you are using to edit your images but if you use a resolution of 72 pixels per inch, your images should appear pretty much consistently sized anywhere on the web. This is too low a res for printing but if you use a higher res, the images will look too big onscreen. Also, because of the difference in the way various browsers and sites display images, anything at other than 72 ppi will be very unpredictable.

This should work better, there is a typo!

Great site Derek. Looks great.

I don't know... I've been reading your articles for some time now (mostly in wkfinetools.com). I think a more appropriate site name would have been, "Regards from Perth"!

But I understand the need for "wood association" (hehe...) in regards to the site title.

In any case, good to see everything all in one place! Good luck with the standard website pains!

Cheers,

Nice site! You're off to a great start, Derek!

This may open a flood gate of other referrals, but I've found the web design software from the Coffee Cup people - www.coffeecup.com (http://www.coffeecup.com) - pretty user friendly and reasonably priced for the amateur web designer. And also for those who want to create a reasonably professional looking site and make a few changes and additions now and then. They have a lifetime free upgrade policy and free [30 day?] trial periods for most if not all of their programs.

The reason your files might be a little large isn't the images, it's the un-optimized code - endless repetitions of <P LANG="en-US" CLASS="western" STYLE="margin-bottom: 0cm"> when all you need is <p>. Removing that, and the css stored in your <head> and referencing an external .css file would make you pages much slimmer, not to mention much easier to edit and maintain!
