Maple, Still Green.
Sanded to-400.
Minwax - Finishing Paste Wax.

I thought i'd do a practice one before using the Hickory, Only have enough Hickory for about 8 Mallets.
I'll do a few more practice runs with the Maple as that is plentiful around my area.

Good looking Mallet Scott. Looks like it will do the job.

Nice design on your mallet Scott! I like the simple detail work! You said the wood is still green? Is the wax coating enough to slow down the drying process and keep it from cracking? I don't know... just wondering.

Is it my imagination, or is that a double mallet in the long photo? You say maple is plentiful in your area? sheesh. It is about 4.00 a bd. ft. around here. Care to swap some for mesquite?Max

Thanks guys, I'm going to turn a few more and hand em out to friends.

Steve, Based on Kip Christensen (the pen turning guy) In there New DVD's with Rex and Kip , Kip makes a mallet as one of the projects, he states he likes to turn mallets out of Green wood and he HEAVELY waxes them and leaves them sit a few weeks to dry slowly, he likes that they will ~oval~ and then be less likely to roll off the bench.
Mine will also stand on it's head the end is concaved.
I waxed it and wiped off for a few quick pics it has a Thick coat of the wax on it now.

Harvey, Thats two seperate pictures not sure why there is no seperation gap .

I'd Love some Mesquite, only trouble is shipping costs kills the free wood deal.:(

Are all Maples hard enough to use as mallets?

This one is a prototype, but I am wondering if all Maples are Hard?

I only have enough Hickory to make 8 Mallets IF i'm lucky and don't blow one or more.
