I've agreed to turn a couple pen sets for a Rotary fundraising auction. I would like to give them in a box engraved with the Rotary emblem. Where could I find someone to help me? Anyone on this board interested? What should I expect to pay? If this is inappropriate, please excuse me.

Well, gee. This might be a bit of a stretch, but maybe you could try the sponsor of this here site. :D Keith has posted some of his work here and I know that some other members have been the recipients of some of it, as well. Just go to: http://www.northwindassociates.com/ .

Keith,

That was awfully nice to include everyone in that list...

I have been trying different marketing approaches and nothing has really "Hit" yet... The one thing that I have done recently was to donate a black marble class picture for my kids' Montessori Silent auction. There were 9 classes and they raised around 1500.00 just on the tiles.... One of them went for 400.00 and I agreed to make a couple duplicates for what ever the high bid was on another. The point here is that I know there is a market and if people can see them - they see the value and beauty!

Steve,

I hope your ebay listings are working. Just as a suggestion, right now is the time to contact any college or university bookstore in your local area and inquire about engraving diplomas. Frames for diplomas normally sell for $135.00 so an engraved diploma is a real bargain, it's unique and it is unlikely you will have any competition.

The graduation season is upon us :)

Keith...

This is my first post to this forum.

You can add me to your list of laser engravers that will take on job requests. I recently started my business and this site has been a big help. Although I have many years experience in graphic design and production, I've never worked "for myself" before and setting up this business has been seat of the pants flying. My biggest problems are marketing and pricing my products and services. It's tough coming up with a price when every job seems to be different. I've read through the various postings about pricing, but I'm still unsure.

I'm based in Carroll, Ohio (southeastern Ohio, close to Lancaster). Anyone needing something laser engraved or cut can contact me.

Those of you who are new to engraving take heart, it may seem like a long time to get your new business going but it will happen. In time your part-time income will easily exceed your day job and you will be faced with making the decision whether you want to make the transition to full-time engraver.

For woodworkers, adding laser engraving to your existing projects is the best way to get started. Engraving bowls, boxes, pens or whatever projects you normally enjoy will increase their value and possibly elevate your projects to another level. In time some experimenting with materials other than wood or incorporating them into your woodworking projects can also be beneficial. Of course you might also offer your new skills to your woodworking friends and don't forget that your new engraver will help you to manufacture great shop jigs and fixtures, some may even be marketable to the woodworking community.

I have found that commercial signs have been the most proffitable and for me the most enjoyable engraving work. I hope this thread helps those of you who are just starting out in some way.

I feel so left out!!!! Keith, what happened to me??? I didn't make your list???
Dang, just like my parents...they used to move while I was in school and wouldn't tell me....I'd get off the bus and....sheesh! It would take me weeks to find them!!! Hehehe

Maybe we do need a full and comprehensive list of laser owners and their locations in here somewhere, huh? Maybe quite a few of the other creek patrons could use our services!

Mike,

Sorry about forgetting to add you to the list but at 53 my memory isn't what it used to be :)

I started the laser engravers list in hopes that it would be helpful to SMC Members who were looking for engraving services. I'm now thinking that we need a master listing of skills for all of our members who might be in need of a special skill, process or service that someone in our membership may be able to fill. Everyone knows how I feel about advertising however I think promoting our community is a good thing. Possibly Aaron would have some thoughts about how we might put something together that will allow Members to list any special skills or equipment they have that they would like to share. Searching the public members list won't work since it doesn't search any keywords but maybe there is another way.

Nick Adams

If you would like I could possibly make a webspread. of our laser engravers + thier locations and contact information and host it as ? Not sure. Maybe aaron would allow me to use a subdomain of SMC. Something like http://www.Laserengravers.sawmillcreek.org and have it point to the page I make? If not I can make it a sub-domain of my own website. Would just rather it be for this group and easily found.

Should have my Epilog this week.
After all the work contacting the suppliers of lasers and such, someone pointed me to a near by laser owner looking to sell thier 1.5 yr old machine. And although I am not too keen on buying used electronics/equipment. i think I have found the better deal for my uses.

75watt Epilog Legend 32ex Rotary, Vector Table, Air Assist, Exhaust,

OK,

I just finished adding Dave and Lee to the list of Engravers. For the record I receive at least ten inquiries a week from people looking for an engraver. I refer them to the list so I hope this is working for everyone.

Our list has gotten so long I will sort it by state as soon as I can find a few minutes. Someday we will have a lead-in page for SMC and I will link to any and all lists we host in our Forums.

By the Way! Anyone who lands a million dollar job please don't forget me :)

Please add me to the list, I have a 45 watt Epilog 24tt and am in the
Seattle area. I have a sign shop (vinyl) and do a lot of engraved signs
but lately have specialized in really odd laser work such as 300 acrylic
puzzles for Microsoft, wholesale acrylic/wood/door panel/speakerbox
parts for custom auto shops, even items used in manufacturing. I'll
pretty much try anything, and often am told by the customers that
other laser people wouldn't know how to do it. Just have to use your
imagination and experiment.

Kieth, You can add me to the list of forum members with a laser engraver. Be sure you put me in the "Dumber Than Dirt" sub heading. I've managed to burn a few pieces without destroying anything but I'm in that early, dazed and confused state. Let's see... 1. Learn Coreldraw 11. 2. Learn Corelpaint 11. 3. Learn PhotograV. 4. Upgrade software to version 12. 5. Re-learn software. 6. Learn to run laser, trying to avoind catastrophe..... You get the picture. Jim

I have a laser Engraver. However, it is in addition to our normal Engraving business and thru shortage of space is at my home. Therefore, it is strictly speaking at this stage, a hobby.
By and large, most of our work involves rotary or diamond drag engraving on customers items. With some hand engraving, sublimation and sand carving, I have little time left for playing with the Laser. Current projects are acrylic and MDF trinket and jewellery boxes and penstands. Taking some time to refine the hinges to my satisfaction, but gradually working it out.

Just a note to add that my husband and I have just contracted to buy out Bob Belt's shop (see his thread about laser shop for sale). We will be picking up the equipment in a couple of weeks, which will give us TWO lasers - both Universals, one 20W and the other a 40W. The new acquisition will give us the capability to do wine glasses, bottles, marble, granite, and acrylic, as well as the wood products we have been producing. We may not need to upgrade our 20W to 25.

We are excited about getting the new equipment, even though it is meaning that we have to completely reconfigure our shop--we can live with it!!!

I found you on the list. Did you look under the thread Laser Engravers and CNC tools?

Keith,

Are you talking engraved diploma frame or an engraved diploma "in" a frame? We have three colleges near us and it would be great to offer a service to them. Can you offer an explaination? Thanks...

Kurt,

I was talking about engraving diplomas on black marble tile or wood plaques. At 125 bucks it is cheaper than purchasing a quality frame.

Hello Everyone,

I am new to this forum. Please add me to you Laser Owner List.

In January 2007, I started a small business in North East Pennsylvania near the NY/NJ/PA boarder.

It is called Pocono Digital Woodshop. I am in Shohola, PA 18458

I have 2 used Epilog Laser Engravers that I am just learning to operate. A First Generation Summit and a Profile. Just starter engravers for now, I want a 50 to 100 watt unit someday.

I also do Sublimation with a Epson R1800 Pinter and 16 by 20 press and just got a Sears CompuCarve to do V Carved signs.

I will do mostly small signs and tourist stuff. Look forward to reading more. Enjoyed the Tips and Ideas for Laser Engravers.

Thanks,

AL "digitalwoodshop"
