Who makes an oscillating spindle sander that will run larger diameter drums? Often times, I would like to have a drum that is 6-8" in diameter.
If such an animal exists, can I buy sanding drums that size?

Thanks for any ideas, I'm just fishing.

Grizzly does show a 6X6 drum in their sanding drum selection. Silicon carbide soft sleeves. Their oscillating spindles only go up to 4".www.grizzly.com/catalog/2008/Main/432 (http://www.grizzly.com/catalog/2008/Main/432)

Rob, I have never seen one that runs anything bigger than 4" stock. There are some out there that would probably handle bigger but you would most likely have to come up with the drum yourself. I know you like heavey arn so you should look for an Oliver 34DSD. Should pull a 6'' drum ok. good luck.

Max and state are also ones to consider too.

I think that you are into an old iron edge sander at that point. An old Oakley or similar with a rigid end table would be sweet, and I think that the oscillation is up/down just like a spindle...

After much consideration, I think I will stay with a normal sized spindle sander. I think I have learned that old iron takes up a bunch of space :o- and it aint movin'.

Perhaps I can best fill in between the big old iron pieces with smaller and somewhat portable machines.

I use the Jet floor model almost always with the 4" drum. If I do need to sand a tighter curve it is not hard to change to a smaller one. I also like the large table. It is on a mobile base to make it easier to move.
