I was looking into a jointer after messing around with some crappy borg wood(it wasnt straight... now I see why everyone likes jointers) I found an older delta jointer locally for 100$OBO looks rusty, but I've handled rust before and if you guys think its a good unit I might go for it, here's the pictures;(says it works fine, been stored in a garage for 5 years unused)

What is your budget? For $200 to $250, you could jump to a much nicer model, in better shape. It is amazing the difference. I found a nice Jet 6" with enclosed base for $225. I have seen the Ridgid 6" selling used for $200 to $250 quite frequently. I think you would be MUCH happier if you add that extra amount to the budget.

However, after seeing you ts, I am sure you could make this sing!

That looks like one to pass by. I bought and sold or gave away 4 jointers before I picked up the one I have now. It is an 8" DJ20 Delta. I had 2 4" ones, one was a real nice old Delta. Then came a 6" Craftsman - too short a bed to do any real work. Then came a nice old Rockwell 8" that needed some TLC. I had that one really purring when I decided I wanted a DJ20 for the longer bed. The old Rockwell was much better built and a lot smoother than the DJ20. In jointers, bigger is definitely better. Keep looking.

Just to give you an idea I have this Grizzly 6" in new condition listed at $325 on CL . Don't get in a rush, wait for something a lot nicer for a little more money. Keep looking you find one. Good Luck Bruce
Just my 2 cents if I didn't own a Powermatic I would keep the Grizzly I was very impressed with the cut, as good as my Powermatic.:D

Kyle,
I would offer $75 for it but $100 is ok if that is what it takes.

I have a feeling that you will eventually have a shop with 3-phase power and some seriously W-I-D-E old iron. This little jointer will get you by until then.

Remember that a lot of people are missing fingertips because of jointers. Never ever ever put your fingers above the cutterhead unless you are using push blocks. This would be a good opportunity to make yourself some custom push blocks for face jointing. Think about the hand grip on a hand saw and on a hand plane.

Have you bought a bandsaw yet? I have a 12" Craftsman that needs some minor clean up.

I'll see how low he will go, I bet if I clean it up and dont like it I could sell it for no loss.
I also found this old saw... I don't need the saw, and I don't want the cabinet(puke)... but the fence is a 52" Bies... hes asking 195 total... what do I do... he wont sell the fence separately... I am happy with my current fence, but have been told to get a bies many times.

If the Biesemeyer is in good shape I would jump on it. They are $400 new. If you don't want/need it I would pass. Buy the thing swap the fence and resale the saw with your fence for a little bit to offset the cost.

wow, for $195 I'd buy that thing, put a dado in it, and just keep it! That cabinet would hold a LOT of stuff, just paint it up! That's a GREAT buy there!

I dunno Kyle. We aren't all lucky enough to score these amazing gloat-worthy mint machines.

If surface rust is the only problem with that jointer, I'd say it is worth $100. (but do start the bargaining at $50)

Also, if you do end up with it, do yourself a favor: buy a little tub of Naval Jelly before breaking out the abrasives. The stuff is magic.

Having a 6" jointer isn't as bad as some folks make it seem. It just means your panels will be made up of boards that are 6" wide or less, instead of 8" or whatever. It also means you won't need to put a 220 V circuit in your shop to power the beast. ;)

Yeah, I read somewhere that with TS, etc. at least they can sew the pieces together, with a jointer, well, it's like a woodchipper.

The jointer is already gone... But I might get the other saw... Might use it as an outfeed table for my saw, and get a stacked dado for it... I'll let you know what happens:)

when I was about 18 i wached my finger on a jointer. felt like the blades hit it about 6 times. hurt like hell. tip is now at a 45* angle. I use my finger tip as a 45* guage:D
