I guess thats why workers compensation insurance rates are what they are!

I'm not an actuary, but I do work in the Actuarial department for a major US insurer. The bulk of WC insurance rates goes to cover medical costs. Not to seem gruesome or cold, but most insurers would rather pay out a death settlement than have to deal with a "permanent total disability" case where a worker was seriously and permanently injured as a young man. The long-term costs for a PTD claim like that can easily run into millions of dollars.
