Spalted white birch, 7 ½” diameter X 5 ¼” high X less than ¼” thick. Lots of different colors in this one – plus a few cracks, curl, bark and a little bit of wood! Sanded to 400 grit, multiple coats of thinned Minwax gloss poly.

Hope you don’t mind all the photos but the HF looks different depending upon viewing angle.

Any comments/critiques are welcomed and appreciated!

Thanks for looking!

It looked better in person Steve. Somehow the photos always lose something. But like said the other night, your work is at a level most of us only wish for .:D:D:D

A great piece Steve, good form and stunning colours after spalting, is your white birch just plain white before spalting the same as our silver birch in the UK.

I wonder how you find time to turn and be on the forum so much!

David

Steve,
I really like the form on this. Good continuous curve. I think this is one of your best forms. One that I practice but don't show because I haven't perfected it yet. You picked the perfect wood for this too. This is one of those that I would like to see and hold in person. Well done Steve!!!

Steve,
That is a gorgeous piece. The different grain configuration makes you want to keep turning it around and around. Wonderful work, as always.

I warned you long ago, this hollowing thing will get habit forming. Some of your best work.

Thanks for the kind words everyone! I do appreciate it!

Dave - as far as I know the White Birch and the Silver Birch are the same animal. The wood is very bland in color until it spalts - then you get all sorts of variations of reds, greens, blues and black mixed in. To me, spalting is worth the wait!

Randy - you were so very right - hollowing is addicting! Once again I have to let you know how much I absolutely love the articulating arm system you made! The more I use it - the more I love it! I am still amazed at the smooth operation and the ease with which you can make delicate finishing cuts! The inside of my hollow forms are not sanded but you would never know - they are just that smooth! Thanks again for such a great tool!
