I am planning/designing on making a very simple table for my kids to do projects/crafts, etc. The tabletop will be 30"X60" and 29" high. However, what I want to know is, what should be the dimensions of the legs/frame that holds that size tabletop? I know it can be whatever I wish, but I have no idea what a "standard" is, if there is one. I need to have at least a starting area. I plan on using approximatly 3/4" to 1" thick top. Probably laminate pressed to MDF or something else.

Hi Mark

I made my dinning room table with 3.5" x 3.5" solid oak legs and 4.5" aprons. It's bigger than your table but I’m pleased how the apron/leg appearance matches the 2" edge of the top.

What is the table top dimensions and how high is your table?

And, more importantly, from the edge of the tabletop to the apron...what is that measurement (from both width and length)?

The table is 56 x 96 closed but takes 3-24" leaves. Floor to top is 31.5". The aprons are set back 2.25" from the edge all around but the legs sit proud of the apron by about 1/4".

Sorry, just remeasured the apron and it's 3", not 4.5. (brain cramp)

I adjusted the hieght so i could get chairs with arms under the apron. It sits a bit (~ 1") higher than most dinning tables but it's still comfy.

would you happen to have a picture of this table? I am just curious about the style.

Norm Abram, on The New Yankee Workshop, built a mobile/stationary work table that has flexible dimensions about 2 years ago. It has castors for moving and/that also allow the legs to drop down - so the table is stationary. It sounds like the one that you are trying to design.

Hey, It worked! Not sure why the last 2 are side by side though.

Please excuse my crude workmanship on the bottom; this was a few years ago and i was trying to get it done in time for Thanksgiving.

Also, the table isn't bowed as you see it in the last image, just a low quality wide angle lens (15mm)

Don't Let the kids near that table with their paste and paint. Too nice
