BS Table Tilt and Insert Question

I need to make a cut on my bandsaw the requires me to tilt the table to 36 degrees. Sounds easy enough. I do this and note that the blade will attack the plastic insert on my Laguna. What do you guys to to prevent this? Do you remove the insert and put a sacrifical piece of mdf over the opening and use it to support the work piece? I can't imagine leaving the insert opening uncovered. Any suggestions?

I have an old Craftsman and I've had to make special inserts for situations like that. Makes you wonder what were they thinking when they designed it.
