I found this old walnut listed in the "barter" section on Craigslist and wrote an email asking for a response. Well, the owner called me back and told me about it - he said he purchased it from a guy in need of money 2 years ago for $125.00. The seller told him it had been cut in Missouri 75 or so years ago and that he had brought it with him when he came to Arizona. I have no idea if any of that is true, but it makes for a good story. Anyway I ended up trading, among other things, an M-15 grenade launcher sight, an old brass doorknob, an old liquid nitrogen vessel, a Marshall practice amp that I had in high school, and $50.00 cash for the group you see here. 3 of the 6 planks are 80" x 14" x .875", 2 of the 6 are 80" x 11.5" x .875", and 1 of the 6 is 80" x 10.5" x 1.75". Just picked it all up yesterday. I put a 2x4 in the center of the edge pic for thickness reference.

Ooooh, Purty!!! Any plans for them or are they for bragging rights, hoarding, and that future project?

Nice haul.

It looks like the board on the right may have the pith (exact center of the tree) in at least the top part... If so that needs to be cut out before you use it, or you will have stability/splitting problems. (I bought some walnut that had been moved, etc., and had to cut out a lot of pith)

The other thing I suggest is that you isolate this walnut from other you may have. Since it is a different age, from a different area, you may find it has a quite different color when you build a project. (I mixed my "find" with my other wood, and kept getting surprised just before glue-up... or in a couple cases, after glue up. Not good!)

Strictly a hoarding purchase.
