What would you choose between the Rolly Mundo & the Exocet hollowing tools?
I got to use both on roughing out a hollow form at another turners studio. I used each for a little while to try them out on the same piece.
I liked them both, the owner of them likes both but for different reasons & uses both frequently. I can't afford to get both so I have to choose between the two. When I asked the owner which he likes BEST he really couldn't pick one as he usually uses both of them on each hollow forms he makes.
So what do you guys Perfer?
& who has the best price on the Rolly?

Hi Joe,
Both Munro and Exocet are similar indesign and in my humble opinion will be prone to clogging at some stage. The Munro hollower oftens runs better at a low speed and I prefer high speed hollowing :D yeehar

below are some links on hollowers etc

But I prefer the Woodcut Proforme, heres comparison between Munro and Wooduct. One thing about the Pproforme is that you can buy the heads alone and make your own handle this will save you a considerable amount.

Joe,
you may need to sit down and figure what you intend to turn.

A side from that, the only reason I recommended the Proforme is becuase you can get into it at a very reasonable price. If it does not suit you, not a great deal has been lost.

Rolly will sell you spare cutters,[ $15-20 or so] but your a long way off from turning as you will have make the holder and and guard set up.

With the Proforme you get the complete head for around $60-70 and to make up a handle quite simple

see the pics below, I used 3/4" round bar but 5/8 will and then drill the end out to suit the Proforme tang, tap a couple of say 3/16 set screw hole to lock it in place. Turn up your favourite handle shape and a way you go.

What shape cutter is the Profome is it round or oval shaped? How do you sharpen it? & where do to but just the cutter heads?
Thanks Joe

Joe,
here you go.

Parts section showing the head and other parts available, prices are in US dollars

http://www.shop.woodcut-tools.com/section.php?xSec=21?xSearch=&xSec=21&xCmd=cc&xCur=4

have a look around there are performance videos on how it performs along with pdf files on operating instructions

Sharpening with diamond file, cutter shape is a 'J' shape and you adjust by moving the bronze guard on top, left and right, along with back and forward.

By the way I have no affiliation with the company or its owners. I just use the Proforme. :D

I was lucky my wife purchased the complete set of Proforme hollowing tools for Christmas for me and can confirm they excellent tools and easy to sharpen with a diamond file the only thing I have added is the Irons Tool Gate seen on this link:-

I have found this attachment is giving me far greater control of the cutting tool.

I'm a big fan of the Munro Tool. I think the toolset is the most complete of all hollowing tools. It comes with 2 different linkages that make it possible to undercut to a much larger degree than with the swanneck bars you have two pay extra with the other hollowers. The cutter is round and is easy to sharpen on a fine grinding wheel with the supplied sharpening jig. Clogging isn't really an issue. The cuttinghead might looked clogged, but the shavings will be pushed through when you start the next cut.
Depending on what kind of work you want to do, the Munro Mini Set might be the better choice. For smaller work it is much more suitable than it's big brother.
