Please help me before I take a sledgehammer to my PC....

In the last two weeks or so every time I open Corel Draw (12) the Corel software updater pops up, not once, but like every twenty seconds.... Its accessing internet explorer... and there aren't even any updates, except a message that Corel X4 is available...
does anyone know how to turn this off? Its driving me absolutely crazy and its taking me ten times longer to get stuff done.

Thanks

Barbara

Try turning off automatic updates in Windows.

That doesn't seem to do the trick. The instructions in the help tell you to 'go to settings" but there is no settings button on this pop-up. I am going to fish around more in windows.
In the windows control panel there is the same icon as the corel updater, but when you right click the options are close or open... when you double click or choose open, nothing happens... its like a bad virus.

Try going to Start, Control Panel, and click on Program Updates. When Update Manager opens, click on Change Update Settings. There should be a box for Corel that you can uncheck.

The program updates icon does absolutely nothing when you click on it. And when you right click, the only choices are "open" and "create shortcut" and clicking open does nothing either... :(
The thing that gets me the most is that there aren't even any updates, there's just a dumb message from Corel telling me that there's a new version. Its really beginning to interfere with working, last night it delayed me for an HOUR because it just kept popping up every few seconds. At one point there were seven instances of it open.
I don't know why this started happening all of a sudden. I dind't change any settings or add any programs, or change internet providers or anything. :(

Barbara, mine started doing the same thing, right after X4 was released. It was so aggravating, it always happens when you are in a hurry, I too was about ready to take a I sledgehammer to the PC but I finally went into my antivirus and Corel no longer has access to the internet unless I say so. I hope if you find the answer you let us know. I wish I could help.

This is not an issue with Windows itself, so turning off Windows Updates is not going to solve the issue. Any of you brave enough to make modifications to the registry? I do not own X4, but the most likely location for them to include update information is in the registry. Programs will typically place a flag that says an update is in progress, which is read in during the next reboot. The flag may or may not be readily visible. If any of you are comfortable at least thumbing through the registry, search for "Corel" and see if any of the key values jump out at you as being tagged for updates.

Maybe it's a sign:) Ditch 12 and go for x3 or x4 , I think its actually a worthwhile upgrade for lasering.

I had exactly the same problem. I believe the offending program is "Installshield" by Macrovision. This url refers: http://consumer.installshield.com/utilities.asp

(look at the bottom under Update Manager)

Despite running the utility several times, I wasn't able to get the utility to remove the problem, but fortunately a copy of CorelDraw X3 arrived and I was able to put it in the "too hard" basket

Good luck with it. It's a very irritating feature.

I beleive if you go to your start menu > programs > corel12> click corel update> then select never check for updates> ok that should fix your problem

I found this in the knowledge base at Corel.com

To disable the InstallShield Update Manager follow the steps below:

Within Explorer®, browse to the following directory:
C:\Program Files\Common Files\InstallShield\UpdateService\
Double click on the file "ISUSPM" ( or ISUSPM.EXE).
Click on the "Update Settings" tab.
Click on the option "The install shield update manager will not automatically check for updates".Maybe that will help?

If Rodne's suggestion doesn't solve the problem, search the registry for the same program... it could be running at startup.

ok, I tried Dean's suggestion, but under the Corel folder there is no "corel update" choice.

Then I tried Rodne's suggestion. When I double click the ISUSPM nothing happens. This is where I'm getting stuck... this icon in control panel and this file in explorer don't open, and do nothing.
I have checked for a virus too...

what would happen if I just attempted to DELETE the file ISUSPM?

I found this too

Removing InstallShield Update Manager
If you wish to remove the InstallShield Update Manager from your workstation, you will need to download and install the Update Manager uninstaller from the following location: http://consumer.installshield.com/kb.asp?id=Q111006 (http://consumer.installshield.com/kb.asp?id=Q111006) .
This will remove the Update Manager service from your computer, updates to Corel products can be found at the following location on the Corel Website:
http://www.corel.com/servlet/Satellite?pagename=Corel2/Downloads/SupportDownloads (http://www.corel.com/servlet/Satellite?pagename=Corel2/Downloads/SupportDownloads)

Found this on a search under Google and it looks like it works for me.

start>control panel>switch to classic view(if not already)>program updates>(under settings) change update settings...either turn off the whole thing by checking turn off or...>select..uncheck the thing you want to turn off>ok>ok

Good Luck!

Thank you all. I was having the same problem as Barbara and tried 3 different methods of getting rid of the Corel X4 garbage. The last method worked. Yipee.:D

I really hate it when you as a user have done NOTHING and all of a sardine the puter goes nuts, requiring like 5 hours of hair tearing out work to fix. It's like looking up in the blue sky and a cow flies over and a cowpat lands in your face

I did a degree in puter science in '77, not one thing i learned then has been at all useful with modern puters, instead of getting MORE user friendly , just running a puter requires one to be a rocket scientist!!!!

I had the same basic problem and Dean's fix was the ticket, hopefully your's will be as easy to fix. Thanks for the help, Terry

I've also had good luck by, in my browser, going to "Tools", then click on "pop-up blocker" and set it for medium. It won't allow pop-ups, but you can still change pages in a forum (the highest setting won't let you do THAT).

We recently had an issue with an upgrade to windows that we needed to do , Service pack upgrade, for another software. After upgrading our Corel would take about 2 minuted to open, printed, save anything. We looked up the issue and found that a lot of people had this issue with no one being able to fix it. We tried uninstalling and reinstalling Corel but that did not work. By the way there is no way to completely uninstall Corel and all of the hidden files. We had to completely redo the system and now it works fine. Be cautious when updating especially if it is your production machine. Sometimes it is better to make sure you have a complete duplicate drive in case you have issues at least you can get work done while you try to solve the issue. We now have two drives on that machine that are identical and can boot off wither one.
