Very interesting Chris. You must have had to do a lot of prep work to glue lam those together.
When I saw the last photo I was thinking the young boy could use that in the snow.;)

my son like everything i do
the outboard rest works pretty good
the more weight for the bottom plate the better (right now it is a 1" this x12" x12" steel plate)
prep work was not that bad just cut and glue everything together

Because he could? When I get a full size lathe I'll probably try something similar just to see what its like to run something that large. Good job, Chris.

Chris - great looking boy! Quite the bowl! To bad it wasn't just a little deeper as it would make for a great popcorn bowl! Nice work!
Just out of curiosity - what was the speed when you turned that monster?

i started out SLOW and worked up
most of the roughing was done at 200 rpm ti finally get it round
some of the final turning was done at 300 sanding was up to 350 -375( i love my jet 1642
i did use 18 stainless steel screws on it
(i did not want it to move )

Chris, that is a huge piece! You boy is really cute and looks like he is ready for the snow:rolleyes:. How was the soft pine 2x4's to turn? You bringing it to the show and tell in April?
I like your homemade outboard turning rig, I would like to copy the design and somehow make the distance from the lathe adjustable for deeper bowls as well as platters.
Great job!

Excellent job Chris.
Looks awsome hanging off the end, nice outpost too.
Platter looks great with your son sitting in it.

i thought about going
my dads business is closing and we have to start getting stuff out (long story
it is adjustable the bend that hooks to the pipe on the lathe is 1-1/4" which slides over the 1" pipe
the whole thing is based on the info that was in the winter 2008 issue of wood turning design
pine is fun to turn
this is done from 1 2x4

it has been sold already though (got good money for it

That is absolutely great! Gotta love those "dare's", they tend to push you to or over the limit.

dares are great
they expand your ideas
and drive you insane
the bad part of the outboard rest is i can still go bigger than that one
i believe it will max out around 41"-42"
i will not be making anything that large yet:)

I'm pretty sure of the production time on the one piece, but how bout the other? ;)

obviously the laminated piece was "quick" the other piece (normal segmented work) was not all that bad
i did that as 2 halves and then glued them together

Dale,
That distance is adjustable. Look at the pipe that is horizontal and you will see the set screw that locks down the pipes that slide out for greater depth. I am in the process of building the same rest.

I think if you give it time the finish will improve just from all the diaper polishing being applied. ;-)
Amazing piece!

Both pieces are awesome. Never thought a 2x4 could look so good.
