I really hate to bug you guys with this because I should be able to find it myself.

I am getting ready to make some Adirondack chairs and I want to make them with Redwood or Western Red Cedar.

The problem is everywhere I call they have cedar or redwood but it is always 3/4 inch ruff cut which means it would be to small after I plane it.

I have found some on the net but again it is for decking or fencing.

So do you know where I could get what I need...

Thank You...

some lumber yards near me sell 1 inch thick material that is rough on one face in addition to the 3/4 inch thick material.

sometimes you need to ask for decking material many carpenters like the thicker boards to use for decking material.

good luck

Bill,

Try this link, http://woodfinder.com/ . I was able to find western red cedar and redwood at a lumber yard in Richmond that I didn't know existed before I found it there.

Cheers,,

Bill - try 5/4 cedar decking. That should be readily available

Bill, did you ever consider cypress?

Cypress- I was never too impressed with it because it's soft and plain and I just didn't like to work it. I was visiting the site of the last battle of the Civil War which is at Palmito Ranch near where the Rio Grande used to enter the Gulf of Mexico and I went out to Boca Chica Crossing which is on the water between the mainland and the barrier island where Zachary Taylor staged for the invasion of Mexico in 1847. He built a floating bridge there which was anchored by large Cypress pilings and those things are still there. This is a subtropical area where anything made of wood has a hard time from borers, hurrricanes, and the heat and they have survived for over a 160 years

If you choose cypress you could look forward to the chairs being passed down several generations.

No, I hadn't but I guess I should.

I will do some looking and see how the cost is compared to redwood.

Thanks.

Bill,I used to build a lot of adirondack chairs when the cabinet business was slow. The redwood I used was called clear heart. Much of it was vertical grain and was kd. I typically bought it from a specialty yard that catered to builders of high end homes. I have also found this material in old lumber yards where it was sold at the same price a redwood decking.A final caution. Be sure to avoid redwood decking. It is typically not kd, and not heart wood and not worth messing with. If you find some clear heart please let us know what it goes for these days. Fifteen years ago I could buy it for about a buck per foot in thousand board foot quantities.Good luck with your chairs!Larry

Uhm, I can look out the window and see forests and forests full of redwood! It is a dime a dozen around here and in a myriad of sizes! ;)
